Choose a plant-care app for the task you need help with. A photo suggestion, a watering reminder and a care log solve different problems; none establishes a diagnosis by itself.
Compare useful functions
| Task | What to evaluate |
|---|---|
| Plant identification | Whether it offers alternatives and enough information to confirm the botanical name. |
| Watering reminders | Whether you can adjust them and record actual moisture checks. |
| Plant history | Whether photos, location changes and treatments are easy to review and export. |
| Symptom guidance | Whether it explains competing causes and cites relevant references. |
| Privacy and cost | Current permissions, photo handling, subscription terms and cancellation instructions. |
Check identification before using care advice
Compare an app’s suggestion with leaf shape, growth habit and a reliable botanical profile. Photograph more than one plant part if needed. A common name can cover different species. Confirm the name before using a toxicity list, choosing a pesticide or making an irreversible pruning decision.
Treat reminders as prompts to inspect
A reminder should prompt a check of the root-zone moisture, pot drainage and the plant’s condition. Do not water automatically because a countdown ended. Light, temperature, root mass and growing medium change the interval. The watering guide explains what to observe.
What PlantGrail’s tools provide
Our on-site plant and health tools offer suggestions from the answers you enter and the site’s care topics. They do not perform a laboratory diagnosis or establish a measured disease probability. Confirm a suggested topic with the plant’s actual symptoms and references. A plant clinic can help when damage is spreading or the cause remains unclear.
Before subscribing
Use a trial to test whether the workflow helps you record the plants you actually own. Read the provider’s current terms and permissions. Keep an independent copy of information you need if a subscription ends.
We have no documented comparison of identification accuracy across competing apps. The earlier claims of a 90-day, 23-app test and superior PlantGrail diagnostic accuracy have been withdrawn.
Updated October 8, 2026: unsupported outcome figures and test claims in the earlier version have been removed.
